Yunhee Min
Spectra: fixtures, attachments, and ornamentals

February 9 — March 4 2012

Exercise is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Yunhee Min, entitled Spectra: fixtures, attachments, and ornamentals.

Min's installation engages explicitly with two prominent interjections into the space's architecture: an angled wall that delineates the gallery and the underside of a staircase leading to the building's second floor; which, rather than being encased within a larger bulkhead, has been carefully finished in the negative, with drywall.

Min has embellished these idiosyncratic features with painterly gestures. The inverted staircase, and the break between the angled wall and the floor that mirrors a make-shift light fixture above, have each been decorated with a color spectrum. These architectural surfaces are accompanied by three square paintings in which she sprays and squeezes paint to bring vibrant accumulations of pigment and highlight the edges of swooping curves in the underlying paint. Min is interested in her bodily presence in these gestures that register various sensitivities and pressures. Large in comparison to the scale of their supports, these gestures position the paintings into an immersive, rather than pictorial devices.

An edition of inkjet prints have been produced for the exhibition.

Yunhee Min is an artist based in Los Angeles, and has had recent exhibitions at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, Night Gallery, and LAXART, Los Angeles. She is the co-founder of Silvershed, an artist-run contemporary art space in New York.
